“We are not soldiers”

And he’s right. Tony isn’t a soldier. Clint and Natasha have been affiliated with Shield long enough that they can fall into a military mindset. Thor has commanded armies in battle. Bruce has been running from the military for so long that he knows their ploys better than they do. Cap is the leader. The front man. The one the rest look to for direction. Tony, Tony is a civilian who found himself reborn from an untenable situation into an extraordinary circumstance.

If Cap is the leader of the team, then Tony is it’s heart. He encounters these people during the direst of events. He has met only one of them before and yet in less than an afternoon, Tony shows over and again his commitment to this team that he was considered ‘not recommended’ for. From risking his life to restart the rotors on the helicarrier, to flying the nuke to almost certain death. Somewhere between the whine of over reaching repulsors, the thick, cloyingly sweet smell of his own blood, the screams of the people he is trying to protect and the rapid, terrified beat of his own heart, Tony decides that these people, these five strangers who are as lost and broken as himself, are now his people.

He takes them into his home. He feeds them. Makes sure they have whatever tech and weapons they need to keep them safe. He uses his own money, not money from the government or the military or S.I. or Shield, but from his own personal accounts. He provides what they all need. Safety, security, family.

As Captain, Steve observes, analyzes and then acts. He hears Tony’s fast, panicked breathing over the comm. Watches as this man he was ready to throw down with less than a few hours before selflessly puts himself on the line. He looks past Tony’s walls, pulls down his screens, teaches him to breathe. He sees this man, a man who vehemently refuses to place himself on the same level of the men and women he spent his life making weapons for to keep safe, the men and women who died in the choking dust and piercing heat of the desert, who gave their lives to protect his. A man who refuses to believe in himself. Sees how strongly he cares. How deeply he loves. Loves his country, loves his friends, will kill to protect his family. And he acts. Becomes Tony’s friend. His teammate. His brother.

Cap is the leader of the team. Tony is the heart. Together they are the soul.
